Sello Pesa’s often site specific works and Living Installations are concerned with the changes and challenges that arise from living in South Africa. His pieces are fuelled by a keen eye and analysis of seemingly ordinary situations. BAG BEATINGS is a disconcerting experiment on the boundaries of theatre and dance, one which repeatedly evokes in the audience the feeling they are in the presence of a violent crime, before, in the next moment, reminding them of the absurdity of the basic situation. By making a lifeless object – and moreover one that has been “made for punching” – into the target, the performance explores extreme physical violence in a way that, on the one hand, appears abstract and almost comical, and, on the other, could not be more real or unsettling.

Sello Pesa is a Soweto born choreographer and performance Artist interested in the changes and challenges that arise from living in South Africa. His fascination with Site Specific work and the creation of Living Installations is fuelled by a keen eye and analysis of ordinary situations. Pesa enjoys exploring and pushing the boundaries of accepted practices and focuses on the development of site specific work that speaks to the surrounds. His collaboration with Vaughn Sadie on the work INHABITANT, was awarded the Critical Endeavour Award at the iDans Festival in Istanbul.

Hlengiwe Lushaba Madlala is highly motivated and passionate about the power which art has to rehabilitate and shift societal perception. The dignity of an African identity is a catalyst in much of her work which sees her confronting stereotypical constructs of the “black face” in performance. Her 2006 Standard Bank Young Artist Award choreographic work, ZIYAKHIPHA…COME DANCE WITH US, showcased at the National Arts Festival went on to win the MEC Choreographic Award for Outstanding Original Work.  NOT ANOTHER DIVA is her latest collaboration with Faustin Linyekula. At SPIELART 2019 she can also be seen in Mats Staub’s DEATH AND BIRTH IN MY LIFE.

Humphrey Maleka was born and raised in Soweto, Johannesburg. He Joined Ntsoana’s Training and Development programme in 2006 after which he became a permanent company member. He is interested in socio-political matters which affect people on a daily basis regardless of their race , culture, sexuality, class, religion or political affiliation. His intention is to bring these matters to the fore so that they can stimulate conversations and discussions amongst people in the hope that they will come up with solutions to our societal challenges.

Ange Bembeka is originally from the Congo and now lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. Through his association with the Dance Studio, Ange became involved with Ntsoana Contemporary Dance Theatre. He has participated in several of Ntsoana’s workshop programmes and his first performance with the company was shown at Dance Umbrella, Johannesburg in 2015.
