The majority of Hungarians regard this plant not only typically Hungarian but no less than a national treasure: the plant is the black locust (also known as false acacia). In fact, it is not a native species but an immigrant from North America which has become one of the most widespread plant species in Hungary. The existence of the tree divides expert opinions: it is a thorn in the side of the environmentalists, who see it as an invader of the biosphere; while foresters insist it is harmless. The black locust has been used and reused as a symbol along different ideologies and recent years are no exception. In HUNGARIAN ACACIA Kristóf Kelemen and Bence György Pálinkás ask the question: how has a simple tree become the subject of heated political debate? In so doing, they draw on the tools of a post-fact documentary theatre which intervenes in the political debate with selected satirical campaigns and start a movement that offers an alternative interpretation of the acacia as a political symbol – the question remains: will this take root too?
