The ORESTEIA is not merely the only trilogy that has come down to us from the theatre of antiquity; it is also the founding myth of western civilisation. In OREST IN MOSSUL, Milo Rau transports this antique material and travels with his ensemble to war-ravaged Mosul. The “Islamic State” declared its caliphate in the Iraqi town in 2014. In barely any other place in the world does the principle of blood vengeance, the never-ending cycle of revenge which also drives Orestes, seem more manifest than here, where inhabitants are confronted with the question of how to deal with captured IS fighters. Milo Rau stages this tragedy with a mixed ensemble of actors of European and Iraqi descent, and with investigations and sub-projects in Mosul presented in the form of video projections. The overarching question is: Is it possible to break the cycle of violence in Mosul and replace it with a principle of jurisdiction, integration and reconciliation?

Milo Rau was at SPIELART in 2015 with THE CIVIL WARS and THE DARK AGES and in 2017 with DIE 120 TAGE VON SODOM.
