Nauru is a small island state in the Pacific. English whalers once called it “Pleasant Island”. The history of this present-day mini state can be read as a parable of the western world. Following the discovery of enormous phosphate reserves, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every inch of land was dug up and mined – until the island’s natural resources were completely depleted. Today, Nauru is one of the poorest countries in the world. To generate state income, Nauru interns refugees at Australia’s behest. Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere travelled to Nauru on a research trip for their project PLEASANT ISLAND. Once there, they talked to inhabitants and refugees. Because they were threatened with reprisals, they dispensed with camera equipment and limited themselves to interviews on mobile phones. The aesthetic of the smartphone also dominates the events on stage. The documentary immediacy points to the urgency of the situation: Nauru’s decimated ecosystem is the harbinger of a looming global environmental catastrophe.
