During the period of apartheid in South Africa, an energetic dance form, pantsula, emerged in the townships. Very soon, a new sub-culture grew up around the extremely fast and virtuoso step sequences. Their codes are still visible today in the form of clothing, language, music, and a very particular life philosophy. In THE ECSTATIC, Jeremy Nedd and Impilo Mapantsula bring the pantsula together with another dance tradition – the praise break. It comes from the church context of the Pentecostal movement. These church services combine dance movements, voice and sound in an exuberant way. The participants experience true ecstasy. But what happens in the encounter between the two dance styles? In THE ECSTATIC, Jeremy Nedd and Impilo Mapantsula make the “break” the focus. It is understood literally – as an interruption. On stage, time almost seems to stand still, while six dancers explore the moment of ecstatic experience as well as a sense of absorption into a community in a precise study of movement.
