In his book ON BULLSHIT, the philosopher Harry Frankfurt explores a kind of speaking which does not lay claim to any truthful content and therefore cannot be refuted. He believes this “bullshit” poses a greater danger to facts and realities than actual lies. SHORT OF LYING takes this concept as its starting point. It is a narrative performance about deceptions, a lecture on telling stories. It is about most people’s deep-seated desire to ascribe meaning and logic to their lives and experiences, a desire that in recent decades has been shamelessly captured by the communication media. The piece is about how powerfully the multitude of stories to which we are exposed on a daily basis shapes our perception of reality. In the form of a TED Talk, SHORT OF LYING explores the art of argumentation, exposes various mechanisms of manipulation, and playfully entangles the audience in a web of deceptions and dangerous superficial knowledge.
